The best thing about this weekend is that Monday is a holiday and I can relax.
The even better thing is Oceanside is only 6 weeks away.  So I’m starting to compile my list of must-haves for what I’ve been using in training to supply myself for the race.  I know in the weeks to come I’ll have lists on top of lists of things I need, things I have, things I want, and will constantly rotate them until I have everything prepped for the event.
Gu Chomps (Pictured): Oddly enough, I can’t actually handle normal Gu, my GI Tract can’t handle it and I’d be a mess on the road if I took it.  I really love Gu Chomps though. I take a couple before I head out, chase it with water, and will have more on me throughout the run. I purchase mine at Road Runner Sports (and REI), but you can find them anywhere online.
Brooks Ghost Series Running Shoes: I was AWFUL (I mean awful) at purchasing shoes that were more functional than looked good three years ago. I had more pairs of Nikes than anything else.  But I grew up and while Nikes look cool, I’ve never had good luck with them (running-wise).  After a lot of looking around, I finally found a lightweight shoe that’s also stable for me. The Brooks Ghost 3s I wore for the past year and a half and the other day I just stocked up on some Ghost 4s (two-pair!). Those in combination with my insert soles and I’m golden!
Sunglasses: Sometimes I don’t even wear them for the SUN. In harsh conditions, it feels better to have something protecting my eyes.  You can find whatever pair helps you best, but I bought a cheapo set at Target (actually branded Ironman) for maybe $15, 20 bucks.  I’ve had them ever since.
Road ID: Accidents are called accidents for a reason. No one expects to have them. Ever since I started running I’ve had a Road ID. I used to not be the best at running either when it came to safety. Running at night, with traffic, in dimly lit areas. I’m surprised I haven’t had to have my Road ID checked before. But now it’s with me everywhere.
These aren’t all my basic training gear items, but are the ones I most commonly forget to suggest when talking with friends about running, training, and being safe!
Happy weekend friends!
